Self-Determination Theory
More than 40 years ago, motivationWorks founders Drs. Richard Ryan and Edward Deci created Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as a measurable scientific model of motivation, behavior, and well-being.
With thousands of scholars, researchers, and professionals around the world now using SDT as the basis of their work, today it has become the leading behavioral science model for motivation and engagement in the world, with thousands of independent research studies confirming its remarkable value in understanding, measuring, and improving experience. It provides a powerful framework for understanding how to foster individuals’ growth and potential in a variety of circumstances, including healthcare, finance, education, parenting, entertainment, and of course, the workplace.
Self-Determination Theory challenges all of us to shift our thinking from how do we motivate people, to a much more effective question: How do we create the conditions for people to flourish? Scott Rigby, Ph.D.
Scott is an author and behavioral scientist. In addition to being the co-creator of motivationWorks, he is also founder/CEO of Immersyve Inc., a company applying behavioral science to organizations, products, and services.
Richard M. Ryan, Ph.D.
Richard is a clinical psychologist and Professor at the Institute for Positive Psychology and Education at the Australian Catholic University and at the Department of Psychology at the University of Rochester, in addition to being co-developer of Self-Determination Theory and co-creator of motivationWorks.
Edward L. Deci, Ph.D.
Edward is a Professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Rochester, Professorial Fellow at the Institute for Positive Psychology and Education at the Australian Catholic University, and Professor of Motivation at Buskerud and Vestfold University College in Norway, as well as co-developer of Self-Determination Theory and co-creator of motivationWorks.
